Creating a Workspace
Zengine workspaces are designed to let you configure a completely custom business application in under an hour. This article presents the three primary methods for getting started with a workspace.

Below is a comparison of the three methods for getting started with a workspace. It is worth noting, they are not mutually exclusive. You could start with a template, then build additional forms, and import data into them. However, if you are exploring Zengine for the first time, we recommend you start with one method based on the below comparison.
|From a template||This is the quickest way to get started and is best if you are learning how to use the system for the first time. Start from a template, then modify the forms and permissions to meet your requirements.||If there is no template that is a suitable match for your business process, this may not be useful. Contact us if there is a template you wish for us to build.|
|By building one or more forms||This option allows you to use drag and drop tools to build your form or a set of related forms. Think of this like adding columns to a spreadsheet, but that can have validation rules, such as making a cell required for every row.||Although this is the most flexible option, it is the most time consuming because it requires you to first think through the way you want to structure your data.|
|By importing existing data||This option is best if you are migrating from a spreadsheet or a simple database system that has mostly text-based fields.||If you are migrating from a system that has many validation rules or calculated fields, it is a better choice to build a form manually and then import into that form rather than choosing the import to create a new form option.|
Creating a workspace via a template
Templates consist of pre-configured forms, to help you get started quickly.
We currently offer the following 10 templates:
- Contact Management
- Sales / CRM
- Project Management
- Marketing Projects
- Product Development
- Human Resources
- Volunteer Tracking
- Event Planning
- Customer Support
Each of these templates consists of one or more forms preconfigured to meet specific needs. For instance, if you’re interested in a business app to help manage your sales efforts and act as a robust customer relationship management (CRM) tool, the Sales/CRM template has been designed to track opportunities, correspondence, contacts, and companies, with linked fields connecting data across forms.
As you become more familiar with the template, it will become easy to update and modify it. For instance, the Opportunities form in our Sales/CRM workspace has been designed to include a dozen fields to help you track opportunities and the associated sales representative with linked fields that draw information from the Companies and Contacts forms. If you find the need to track other pieces of data associated with fields on your form, you can add linked fields for them using the form builder tool in your workspace.
Creating a workspace from a template
After clicking on the "New Workspace" button on the home screen, you'll get a list of template options, as well as a "Custom Workspace" option.
Choose the template that best suits your needs. Before you install a template, you'll be shown a detailed overview of what the template includes. Click on the green "Yes, I'll use this template" button to confirm your choice and install the template. Once the template has been installed, you will be able to continue into the newly created workspace.
Creating a workspace manually by building custom forms
If you have a good idea of what you want to track, but it doesn't fit into one of the pre-configured templates, then manually creating forms is a good way to get started.
After clicking on the "New Workspace" button on the home screen, click on the "Custom Workspace" option at the end of the template list. You will be prompted to give your workspace a name.
Once the workspace is created, you will be prompted for your first form name. Think of this as a tab on a spreadsheet. If your workspace is for tracking your company's leads and customers, then your first form might be called "Contacts."
Once your workspace is created, you will want to edit your first form and add fields to it (analogous to columns on a spreadsheet). You can also create additional forms to link other data related to your process by.

Creating a workspace manually by importing existing data
If you have existing data that you wish to import into Zengine, then you may want to get started by importing that data into a workspace.
To get started, follow the instructions above for creating a workspace manually using the Custom Workspace option. Then refer to the following article on Building a Form via Import to create a new form using existing data.
